Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes is a beloved classic childhood tale that today seems to reflect our world in a strangely relevant way. The story is more or less familiar: a vain king, obsessed with his appearance, falls victim to swindlers who promise him the most magnificent garment, made from fabrics that only fools cannot see. The people, the ministers, and the officials, afraid to expose themselves, are likewise swept up in the fantasy, pretending they can see the nonexistent garment. And so, the king parades through the city naked. In our theatrical version, however, there are many voices of honesty that break social barriers simply to tell the truth.
Paraskevas Karasoulos and Nikandros Savvidis reintroduce the timeless story of the Danish author, weaving a contemporary musical dramaturgy rich in dialogue, action, and characters. The plot, satirical toward the vanity and delusion of power, highlights concepts that lie at the heart of everything we do: persistence and courage, honesty and truth, critical thinking and self-awareness.
This vivid story does not remain on paper; it takes flesh and bone on stage through Marina Vronti’s directorial vision, who returns to Stage 018 to create a colorful and frenetic theatrical playground. In a revealing stage setting where everything is at once hidden and visible, the nine actors share a bold, physically expressive, and humorous acting code, discreetly winking at the audience who observes everything, offering them a mirror in which anyone who looks may recognize their own reflection-even a distorted one.
